Why Character Limits Matter for SEO and Social Media
Going over the limit means your text gets truncated. Falling too short means you missed a keyword opportunity. Here is the ultimate guide to platform limits in 2025.
The Cost of Truncation
When you write a brilliant SEO Title or an engaging Tweet, the platform decides how much to show based on pixel width or strict character counts. If they cut your text off midway, it is replaced with an ellipsis (...).
The Google SEO Limits
- Title Tags: Limit to ~60 characters (strictly < 600 pixels). If your title is "Buy Blue Shoes - Free Shipping Today", it will render clearly. If it is 80 characters long, Google hides the value proposition.
- Meta Descriptions: Keep it between 150-160 characters. Any longer and the call to action disappears.
Social Media Limits (2025)
Twitter (X)
Standard users are capped at 280 characters.
Instagram Captions & Bio
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in a caption, but it truncates after the first 125 characters with a "See More" button. Therefore, your first 125 characters must be the hook. The bio is strictly limited to 150 characters.
LinkedIn Posts
A company update truncates after roughly 140 characters. However, you can write up to 3,000 characters per post for deep thought-leadership content.
